Androderm is a transdermal testosterone patch designed to deliver testosterone into the body through the skin for the treatment of testosterone deficiency symptoms. This type of method is another form of testosterone replacement therapy. Some men prefer testosterone patch treatment because it is non-invasive unike testosterone injections.
The testosterone in Androderm is identical to the naturally occurring testosterone present in the body. It is not a synthetic drug but rather a bioidentical hormone that has been chemically patterned after the natural testosterone hormone produced by the testes.
This medication is not addictive and is available only with a doctor's prescription. It is not recommended for use of children below 15 years old. It is also not recommended for use by females.
Androderm patches are available in two strengths--2.5 or 5 mg daily.
You should only use Androderm as directed. If you are taking Androderm, your doctor may make adjustments to the guidelines in applying androderm patches depending on your personal medical requirements. If no instructions have been given, you should strictly follow the general guidelines provided with androderm medication.
Apply Androderm patches to a different site of the skin each day. There are, however, specific bodily regions (thighs, abdomen, middle arm, and central to upper back) indicated for Androderm use – apply androderm to these places only. To avoid potential irritation of a specific skin area, it is recommended that at least one week be given before rotating back to that area of skin.
Androderm may produce some side effects, both short-term and over the long run. Side effects to watch for when using this medication are skin irritation, acne, shrinking of the testicles, and irritability.
If mild skin irritation occurs, apply a small amount of 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide cream to the skin. This formula does not significantly alter transdermal absorption of testosterone from the system. Ointment formulations of triamcinolone should not be used.
Androderm is not to be used by anyone who is allergic to testosterone or to the other substances or ingredients of Androderm. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to testosterone include shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, rashes, breathing difficulty, itching of the skin. In case symptoms of allergy to testosterone, discontinue use immediately and consult with your doctor.
