Low testosterone is a result of the inability of the testes to produce sufficient amount of testosterone hormones. Since it is one of the most important, male sex hormone, lack of it can affect the entire body system and cause many physiologic, hormonal and chemical changes. Low testosterone can also result from the decreased production of two main hormones: the pituitary gland and hypothalamus.
There several reasons for low testosterone production. The most common of these include testicular dysfunctions and brain disorders, particularly relating to the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. Testicular dysfunctions occur due to damaged testicles or congenital problems. Brain disorders affecting the pituitary gland and hypothalamus are usually the result of a genetic disorder, surgery, blood iron disorders or an existing tumor in the brain. Acquired problems such as aging, chronic diseases and their treatments, acute critical illnesses, major traumas, surgery or even burns are conditions that affect the production of testosterone. External factors such a drug abuse (opiates, glucocorticoids, anabolic steroids) or alcohol abuse and smoking are common culprits that lower testosterone levels.
The preferred treatment is testosterone replacement therapy and more information can be read by clicking on the link below:
