Hormone Therapy For Male Cancer Survivors

Recent research highlights the possibility that men who survive cancer after having radio- or chemo-therapy can suffer from low testosterone levels brought about by their treatment. The findings of the research are discussed and treatments suggested.

Low Testosterone in Cancer Survivors

Men who survive cancer may suffer from long-term effects of low testosterone levels brought about by their cancer treatment, scientists have recently discovered.

Researcher in Sheffield, England checked 176 former patients, finding fatigue and sexual problems in those with the lowest levels of testosterone in their blood.

Writing in the journal Cancer, they called for hormone replacement treatment to be seriously considered for male ex-cancer patients who were suffering from the symptoms of low testosterone. Studies have revealed that problems related to low testosterone levels, caused by chemo- or radio-therapy, can impact close to 15% of male cancer survivors.

It was thought that the effects that have been noticed in male cancer survivors who have received radio- or chemo-therapy were thought to be related to psychological problems. This is the first study to try to measure the long-term effects, and try to separate the psychological from the purely hormonal impacts.

They compared two groups - survivors of treatment recruited, on average, two years after being given their "clear of cancer" diagnosis and another of with 213 men who had no history of cancer.

The cancer sufferers were mostly in their 30s and had cancers which were in no way caused or related to their testosterone levels.

Measurements of "quality-of -life" were lower among the ex-cancer sufferers, but those that also suffered from low testosterone came in at the very bottom of the list for "quality-of-life".

The low testosterone sufferers reported low energy levels, poorer sexual function, reduced sexual desire, and an inability to become sexually aroused.

The research proved these issues were not caused by psychological distress or self-esteem problems related to their suffering from cancer but are related to the treatments they received.

Professor Richard Ross, who led the researchers, said;

"This is an important study demonstrating that low testosterone levels are common in male cancer survivors and associated with an impaired quality of life.

"We now need interventional trials with testosterone to determine which young male cancer survivors will benefit from replacement therapy."

Stuart Danskin, from MacMillan, a charity which offers support to cancer patients and their families during and after treatment, said that while the concept of hormone imbalances was well recognised in some female cancers, it was a "relatively new phenomenon" among males. He said:

"We know that after treatment that patients can feel pretty low - we always used to think that was a psychological effect connected to having cancer itself, but now there is the possibility of hormones being involved."

The next question that surely needs to be answered now is - do the same issues arise in older men who undergo the same treatments?

If you are a survivor of cancer treatment then this might be a good time to have your testosterone levels check. We suggest you take the 5-min testosterone quiz and find out if you do have a problem. Your results will be displayed immediatety you complete the quiz.
